With over a decade’s worth of experience in external and internal auditing, over time, the pressures of the corporate world started to build up. I found myself searching for a hobby that would allow me to express my nurturing side and help reduce stress. During that time, fond memories of my time with my grandmother in the garden started to prod at me and eventually drove me to visit my local garden centers & botanical gardens often. This quickly resulted in my picking up a tomato plant, then another and another.
My love for plants first started with a small vegetable garden in my back yard. I spent every second of my personal time either tending to my garden or learning everything I could to make it thrive. After a few years, I realized that the harsh Texas weather; especially during the hot dog days of summer; made gardening feel more like a grueling chore instead of a joy. Which made it harder and harder to enjoy the time I spent with my plants. I’d find myself staring at them from the window where I could see them, struggling to muster up the will to go outside and fry along side them. And so, I pivoted towards the realm of houseplants. Bringing the outside in, using tropical plants to bring more life and joy into my home. This opened my eyes to a whole new plant world filled with wonder and beauty. Plants with so many different colors, shapes, and growth patterns. It was instant love! Goodbye to staring out the window at my plants, and hello to houseplants in every corner, shelf, nook and cranny in my home! It felt like I hit the hobby jackpot.
My passion grew exponentially, and I found myself wanting to invest more and more of my personal time towards tending and learning about houseplants. A curious person by nature, I started learning everything I could about each plant I brought into my personal collection. As I gained more confidence, I started experimenting with new ways to grow my plant babies and began my Semi Hydro journey . What started off with a tomato grown in hard Texas clay soil, eventually turned into a love for houseplants in semi hydro.
The process of converting my personal collection from soil raised plants into semi hydro can be a risky and messy endeavor. Risky in a sense that it has a lower success rate compared to transitioning cuttings, I won’t get into to the technicalities of why here. However, I found myself searching for plants that are sold as pre-acclimated semi hydro plants, to no avail. Which was a little disheartening at first, because I truly believe; based on my firsthand experience that a lot of the more intimidating, stunning varieties that can be more fussy living in soil tend to be more easy going when correctly set up in semi hydro. Even the non-fussy ones are just easier to care for. So, it felt like people were missing out on a more joyful and rewarding experience.
I decided to change my perspective, instead of viewing the situation as “disheartening” I started looking at it as an opportunity. I must admit, although the concept of starting my own business was a scary thought. My love for plants coupled with a desire to share my rewarding experience with others overrode my fears. And so, Soilless Living LLC was formed in February 2024 as a homebased one women and several plant babies show! With the dream of growing our capacity, over time, to serve a larger customer base.
We care about plants and making your life easier to care for and enjoy them!
